you need to build up layers so it has an even coverage, if you dont the white primer will still show through which makes it looks...funny...so just keep working the layers
colour wise, its hard to say because i dont see the mini and dont know what the plan is with it

you might think to pm/email a shot to starks for some crit/help to get around that little rule.
Hey monkey-nuts...I'll PM you pics soon...like tomorrow.
Might come as a shock but I paint quite differently then Jeremie. My basecoat is far from being just glazes. I use a thicker coat for that part. The important thing to realize is that at the level you have reach no one paints alike. There obviously some big no nos but essentially you have to paint the way it works out best for you...
I usually apply a few (very) thinned base coats of my 3/4 dark shade, then build up and down as appropriate. On this fig, I glazed my median flesh tone on about 7 times, a darker flesh tone about 3 times, then alternated the two for about 20 more passes. Then, I built my highlightes up to white on the brow, right cheek, and nose; that was another 20 coats, but it only took me 3 hours.
akaranseth, it would be monumentous to sit down with you and Jeremie for a day and watch the two of you paint the same fig. If I was rich, I'd pay for it to happen. :)

I guess my point is really...I know I'm good, but I want to be great. I want to be better than you, or anyone else. I guess I feel 'stuck' sometimes in my routine. Last year, Starks did a remarkable job yanking me out of my comfort zone, and getting me to start asking "why", instead of "what". I look at all my entries from Chicago last year and they were all crap. The best thing I got out of them is what not to do, and about $800.
I'm also getting very close to selling most of my 40K army, and focusing on painting only.

I'm always open to give masterclass. If you can gather a group of 10 to 15 persons it comes down not too expansive. Otherwise I'll be at a table giving tips during GD Toronto and Chicago. Or if you go to GENCON i'll also be giving quite a few classes.

haha...i just need one daemon...and i too can make money selling :P
as for selling the army, for me its tough, because i started into this as a gamer, and i love the idea of armies, but being the artist and fussy person i am, its hard to do both and get what you want out of it
you may very well benefit from unloading junk and working as a figure painter, but this would require you to broaden the type of figures you work with, as the variety is key, obviously you are doing it with a reaper mini so far...which is great!
its probably what I myself will end up doing....
getting stuck is part of the process, believe me ive thrown my brush a few times now, and have had many issues with the painting process and whether or not im achieving what i want to achieve...but then i have to remember ive only really been painting for a little over a year...and the guys we look up to have been painting for many, not to mention have painted a ton of figures, and sometimes with and for companies
so as Mathieu said to me, have confidence in your skills, as you are improving with each figure

So now you're mocking me for having won only ONE Demon? You gonna rub it in my face that it wasn't even a gold? ;)
I hope my posting wasn't taken as if I was going to become a "figure painter"...I sell test minis, and stuff I don't need, and rarely do a mini just to earn some cash...although that is a secondary motivation that lies beneath some of my projects.
I started as a gamer as well, and it's to the point now where I paint 20-30 hours per week, and play maybe 6 games a year. The only problem with selling my army, is that I do still love to play the game. The problem with keeping the army, is that it will take me a year to get a squad or two done, even if it IS a Demon project. I may sell off my Terminators, but they're painted in the urban camo scheme...so who's army would they really fit into?
As for moving on, I have recently realized that I need to broaden my horizons. I hate LOTR (minis), and don't care much for WFB at all...so i've always done 40K...and 99% of that has been Marines. So to that end, I'm starting to look at other miniature lines. Although not overly impressed with Reaper's sculpts, they do have some nice ones that are fun to work with...so far. Where I get uncomfortable painting, is when I have lots of random folds, and such in a sculpt, and I don't know whether it goes to the cloak, the shirt, or what. I end up having to guess at what the hell it is, and painting it. With Marines, I know exactly what every edge, fold, and seam is, so I know what to do with it.
All this being said, I'll probably sell my 3 boxes of Harlies, my 20 oop Harlies, and my Terminators. I'm never going to build a Harlequin army, just like I never built the Nid army I had in a box for 3 years. I'm also never going to be happy fielding 10 metal, unconverted Terminators. If 5th edition turns out the way it looks, I'll probably sell my 40 Scouts as well...and maybe that stupid jump Chaplain...I don't know.
In fact, I think I'll pull the trigger, and sell all that shit this weekend.

I dont know about you guys but Im definately up for it. :)
when i said figure painter, i mean you are in for the painting of figures, not for painting GW stuff for GW events or armies....basicly, the art side of things :P
its what i will be doing, and why i have some neat pieces stowed away! from many companies
some lotr minis are gorgeous, this being a great example:
http://www.coolminiornot.com/164969
the best sculpted robes gw has done are on lotr minis...40k is too exaggerated which often ruins the flow of the sculpt...or they dont exaggerated enough and its very lifeless
this is the one thing european companies seem to have is life in the figures and materials they wear...reaper bores the crap out of me because its all lifeless with awkwardly big things or weird shapes, and just not very nice composition
i find infinity figures to have very nice composition, and for a gaming line thats saying something!
my suggestion is to get away from static figures...99% of gw figures are static which is what takes away from them
Yeah...I said to hell with it and put up 53 minis from my army on Ebay...out of about 70.
I'll still have a small army to play with, if I tweek the list right. When I do get a chance to play a game, I find myself wanting to rush home and paint. Also, where I live in Texas, I have yet to host a game here at the farm...and I hate playing in stores.
So, I will still paint Marines, but I am now going to start working with other figs. The Reaper figs I picked out are nice, and they do have some really good ones here and there. Towards the end of the summer, after I've finished all my Rcon, and GD stuff, I will look into broadening my horizons.
